MITCHELL SMITHEY HONORED

by Ann L Young
The Melvin Jones Fellowship is recognition of a commitment to humanitarian work. (It is not an award in the tradition of Lions awards presented for specific accomplishments.) Created in 1973, the fellowship is named for the founder of Lions Clubs International, Melvin Jones. The fellowship is the foundation's highest honor and represents humanitarian qualities such as generosity, compassion, and concern for the less fortunate.
Houston County Lions Club member Mitchell Smithey received a Melvin Jones Fellowship., at the annual Christmas party held this year at Jen’s Steakhouse in Waverly. Smithey was presented the award by Lion George Alsobrooks, also one of the club’s Melvin Jones Fellows. When called upon to make a few comments, Mitchell was unable to speak, being overcome with emotion upon receiving this recognition from his fellow Lions. Mitchell Smithey has been a Lion for 22 years, a past president, and can always be counted on to be working at a Lions Club meeting or fund raising activity. You can see Mitchell at all home football games selling programs, running the annual October Classic Car Show, or helping at the upcoming Variety Show. As a hard working, truly dedicated Lions Club member, Mitchell Smithey certainly deserves all the recognition and thanks that he has received for his service to the Houston County community.

LIONS CLUB CAR SHOW

Each year the Lion club host a variety of local events to produce money to buy glasses for the children of Houston county and the surrounding area. One such event is the car show held each year on the second Saturday in October. Some years the weather works for us. This was one of the years the weather agreed although it started off a little foggy. The photo here is of Ray Bates the winner of this years show favorite. The winner of the best in show was a turquoise 1957 Chevy convertible and a beauty it was. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the people who entered their cars and the folks who visited the show and made donations. As usual I took MORE PHOTOS

Houston County Lucky

Seeing is believing and last week at the regular meeting of the Lions club we discovered that 20/20 vision may not be as good as we had been taught because there other factors inplace that could affect how we interpret what we see. For instance young people are naturally far sighted, so the test that the Lions Club give is usual on far sight. Instead they should always give the near sighted test. But in Houston County we are lucky because of grants we have a program in the School called bridges that in skilled hands can dectect some of the problems that could affect how we interpret what we see. Then we can refer our children to a doctor who could them offer answer to correct these. This weeks speaker to our club was the Doctor that Sherry Nolan had used for her own kids problems.
